3 Stressors Needed for Success – Life & Muay Thai

Stress and anxiety. How do these words make you feel?

These words have a negative connotation that is related to hardship. Losing a job, starting a new job, not knowing where to go next, stepping into the ring for the first time…. or the 100th time. Different situations, same feeling (stress&anxiety). Same feeling, same stressors (resistance, time, the unknown), but different people, different levels of success. Read that statement again, think about it.

So what does it come down to? Perception. There are dozens of reviewed studies that teach us about the reality of stress. That it doesn’t matter what type of stress it is, if it is from a positive or negative origin. What is important is how we view it, how we approach it, and what we do with it.

Anxiety comes from a fear of the future, whether it is a fight 2 minutes from now or where you will be in life 5 years from now. Now. . . it’ll happen to us, we can’t avoid all stress, but what we can do is view it as our body priming itself to fulfill a task, to execute, to become energized and to act.

Below are the three stressors you will encounter.. or will want to encounter throughout your life to become successful at whatever it is that you seek:

Resistance

Resistance comes in two forms, as a physical entity or as a thought. Now. . . the thoughts that create doubt are of our own creation. We may lack support from others, be critiqued by them or even feel an opposition, but the message we receive and the reality we create is in our own thoughts and perceptions.primmmuythai6419

Failure or loss in a physical sense is not usually the real stressor. It is however, a catalyst to the mental mayhem suffered after loss or failure. Many of us love pressing a weight, do we wish that the weight got lighter as a result? No. We wish for our body to get stronger. So why do we hope to avoid stress and the unknown?  As stated above, doubt and negative stress are of our own creation, this means. . .  it is up to you to manipulate the way you take in the information presented.

Take these thoughts that are a resisting you from following your passions and paths to success. Surround yourself with them and get your reps in.

You want to have people to look up to, as a reminder of where you want to be and to humble you. You want to surround yourself with people of your level to outgrow them and to set an influential example. Lastly, you want individuals in your life who are below you, to not only inspire them, but because you also want them to hate on you.

There will be resistance from all three levels, and all three will make you successful. Those below you will be envious; it is a reminder of where you never want to be again. Those on the same level as you don’t want you to fail, but they also don’t want you to succeed. Because if you did. . . that means it is expected of them to adapt to your skill set or it is more work for them to catch up to you. Those above you will be more successful, work harder, and you will feel like you can never replicate what they do. They are an example of what is possible, they are a pile of dry branches soaked in fuel. . . you just have to light it. (Under your ass)

Time

We never have enough time in a day. We also should know that the CEOs of major companies, Kevin Ross, Jay-Z, Joe at Starbucks, and ourselves have the same number of hours in a day.

Time has always been a negative stressor in my life. Instead of honing it in and becoming more productive, I attempted to eliminate it. How? I combined my serious training, my hobby, my job, my education, and my down time activity all into one. I became a full time trainer, fighter, blogger (topic = training), and student (Health & Exercise Science Major), that watched training related things and read about training in my down time.

It seemed like the perfect solution to my problem – gain more time and put all of my focus into one thing. I began to  have less energy, did not feel much happiness, and productiveness was at an all time low. I had more hours in the day right? Correct, the exact reason why less got done. I was a trainer that could create a schedule on his own terms, be able to take his time programming for clients as well as writing content. The ability to play with my schedule when it comes to training sounds amazing, but it is missing one important thing. Urgency.

Any successful individual will tell you it is a good problem to be too busy, then to have too much time on your hands. It’s why those who once thrived, those who never wasted a minute of their life, can deteriorate quickly after retiring . Gaining time and losing urgency. The two must be in perfect balance.

Urgency – you have to get it done because there is only an x amount of days left. There is only an x amount of minutes left in the day. Remember the science project in middle school that was due months later? By most people it wasn’t even touched until the night before. But on that night, the night before. . . when you remembered it had to get done. . . that shit got done.  Use the stress of not having time as a driving force to get shit done, to stop wasting minutes on your phone, watching TV, thinking about the unknown, and start feeling the urgency.

Thank a higher power every morning. For having so much opportunity in life that you don’t have another minute to waste, and every night, for having the will to get it done.

The Unknown

We fear what we don’t know or understand. We stress about every thing that can go wrong before it happens. Will I get knocked out in this fight? What if I am not good at this job? What if I am not smart enough to graduate from this program?

Why is this good for us? It keeps us on our toes. It adds a bit of flavor to life. If we knew what was going to happen every second of every day, we would seek excitement elsewhere. These unknowns are actually stressors that force us to educate ourselves.

There are people who think fighting is barbaric, that can’t comprehend it. Families stress about why their son would choose this path, but until they educate themselves on the sport to some degree. . . this anxiety of the unknown will persist.

Everyday, find things that make you uncomfortable, that you don’t understand, that you are unsure about. I promise you this is a skill in itself and it’s an amazing feeling when you have trained it consistently. Failure will no longer be scary, you will create new relationships, walk through barriers, and the stress you once viewed as negative will become a sharpened tool for learning and growth.

Closing Words

“Strive for growth, not gain”

If we gain something, we can always lose it. Growth, however, has a deeper meaning. No one can take away your growth and education. It’s why records don’t decide who the champion is. It is the one that has grown from his wins and losses combined. He who shows up that night and wins against all odds, barriers and forms of resistance.
