The Mind – Your Foe or Friend?

There is a hot topic of watching too much or too little tape on your opponents. This was my first professional fight, I told my team mates and coaches in Bangkok that I didn’t want to know anything about my opponent.

They replied with, “okay, but just to warn you he loves to clinch, he has been coming off of a number of wins with knees, Muay Khao style”. Their face was rather concerned when I said. . . “that’s fair, he loves to clinch against guys who give him an easy time. . . that’s what you don’t see, he hasn’t had to react to what I do yet.” [confidently saying this without watching the footage].

The second we tapped gloves. . .

. . .I kicked straight into his check. Keeping the mix of a Dutch and Thai style I ripped a few more kicks just to show that it didn’t effect me [a feeling that I may not be able to step on this foot by the next round crept in – not the smartest idea].

Mentally it worked in my favor as I was able to tell myself that I am just fine after throwing the follow up kicks – numbing the pain.

My number one goal in mind was to cut him, an inspiration that came from everyone’s doubt and concerns. My mind adores this process, its fuel is doubt; the doubt is what manifests new ideas.

I cut him in the second round with a switch step elbow and continued to grind the clinch. His transitions were decent, but I can tell that he has never faced someone with my style, transitioning boxing into the clinch and using lower leverage points as a tall fighter.

I grinded through the entire fight to prove a point within the clinch despite being successful in the mid range with my boxing, taking my first win as a professional.

I envisioned what was going to happen, the story was set before I stepped foot in that ring. This was done with realism however; which needs to be understood. I didn’t guess a 10 second knockout as exciting as that is, I created a story and stuck to it based on my skill set, I adapted based on the competition’s reaction and by understanding my strengths and weaknesses.

If I let my thoughts be controlled by words rather than my training, confidence and vision I may have been stuck on the outside losing a game of points. The vision doesn’t always follow the storyline step by step, but that’s the test, that’s where creativity comes into play.

Vision and possibility is created by the mind, the physical movement of it all is sharpened through the rigorous physical training.
